  • HHSrenewedits declaration of a public health emergency for another 90 days effective April 16.
  • The CDC extended its mandate that masks be wornon public transportationto May 3. It was previously set to expire on April 18.

Economy, Vaccines, Testing and Treatment

  • Pfizer is expected to seek FDA authorization fora booster shot of its vaccine for childrenaged 5 to 11. Pfizer’s vaccine is currently the only one authorized for use in that age group.
  • COVIDcases are rising fastestin the Northeast, with Rhode Island reporting a seven-day case rate of 172.4 cases per 100,000 people and average daily cases up 65% in New York and New Jersey.
  • Astatistical analysisof reported cases, hospital admissions, reported deaths, and seroprevalence estimates that 43.9% of the global population had been infected with SARS-CoV-2 at least once as of Nov 14, 2021.
  • Nationwide, 86% of COVID cases in the week ending April 9 werecaused by the BA.2 subvariant.
  • Astudy found that myocarditisoccurred in 2.4 of every 1,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and found an association between myocarditis and severe COVID cases.
  • 2021 was thedeadliest yearin U.S. history due to COVID and increases in death rates of cancer, diabetes, chronic liver disease, stroke, and overdose. The relation between COVID and deaths due to chronic health problems is an ongoing area of study.
